Energy nutrition supplements

Nutrition supplements such as Ensure, Sustagen, or Resource can be used to boost a small meal or snack or to replace solid food. Most supplements contain a good variety of nutrients, particularly energy (kilojoules/calories), protein, vitamins and minerals. They are available in liquid or powdered form.

To make the supplement powders easier to drink, mix them with water. Start off with a small glass and build up to 1-3 glasses a day depending on what your dietitian has recommended. You could also try mixing your supplement powder with milk for extra nourishment.

Glucose powder supplements can also be added to meals and snacks for extra energy. These should not be used as a meal replacement as they don’t provide protein, vitamins or minerals. Glucose supplements can be sprinkled on cereal and fruit, and mixed into foods such as mashed potato, gravy, casseroles, scrambled eggs, custard, hot and cold drinks and soup. Glucose supplements may not be recommended if you have diabetes.

Talk to your dietitian for more information on nutrition supplements.
